OUCH!So I didn't get around to updating on here that I decided to cut my own legs and skins. Printed out the plans for them on plotter. attached the skins to some polystyrene bought from my friend Joel before he moved to Florida for work. Turns out the 1mm polystyrene is easier to cut than I anticipated. Its pretty hard on the fingers but it works. I would up cutting every single panel out for my front skins which I realized after the fact was WAY overkill. I'll wind up re-cutting a new front set one of these days. I have to say I think they they look great though.<br>
<br>
Tried to cut the Box legs from Frank Pirz as he allows you to download the plans for free if you want to cut them yourself. Let me know agree whole heartedly with Frank. I don't know why anyone would want to go through that torture. 1mm styrene cuts pretty easily. Anything else is really difficult especially if its not an outside edge where the plastic has somewhere to move when its being cut. I gave up finally when I realized I wasn't able to cut the notch out of the side for the under shoulder details. Its possible to do this but WAY more work and pain than I was willing to put into it.<div><br></div><div><br><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfUXNtZrDpNOQGkh_KCeI4zvWirzWnNo18LTLZtqFCFuN5W2Ljwv9E0Pnb72Ta8cEAytVj5NSAc8-oZ4ru9hjCZlAKfWyoNyzA4vcEbXw9qEVf0_Wjdi-TPvuF0O2FEzp5PMM8LJzpJZLR/s640/blogger-image--2018414275.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfUXNtZrDpNOQGkh_KCeI4zvWirzWnNo18LTLZtqFCFuN5W2Ljwv9E0Pnb72Ta8cEAytVj5NSAc8-oZ4ru9hjCZlAKfWyoNyzA4vcEbXw9qEVf0_Wjdi-TPvuF0O2FEzp5PMM8LJzpJZLR/s640/blogger-image--2018414275.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div></div></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03397886797119379882noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2367593292754735850.post-82316687462062157562016-08-01T15:03:00.001-07:002016-08-01T17:09:57.390-07:00She's got Legs! She knows how to use them.So after Planet ComicCon 2016, I just felt I wasn't getting anywhere with my build when all the other builders around me were zipping right along. Turns out family and video games will suck up your time like no one's business. Who knew??? LOL<br>
<br>
So Finally go off my butt and ordered legs and the center ankle from Frank Pirz 4 months ago. They arrived last week. Been slowly working on them. So far I've been de-burring the edges of the pieces so they are smooth and the slots are the correct width for pieces to fit together. It is going to be a slow process.<div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipPuj3oRdSVgEyZCLxx875Ir8tf60wNHq8pykAj7cS5PTUmoP407sAl96MutFsNQ0EVTfwY5KxmxXV5GXXxi4IEHrc5iVzfPYucpkT4aS94z-T3ExGP0i8IjsJcQgHfnVEJWMAVbk1L35j/s640/blogger-image--1672003756.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipPuj3oRdSVgEyZCLxx875Ir8tf60wNHq8pykAj7cS5PTUmoP407sAl96MutFsNQ0EVTfwY5KxmxXV5GXXxi4IEHrc5iVzfPYucpkT4aS94z-T3ExGP0i8IjsJcQgHfnVEJWMAVbk1L35j/s640/blogger-image--1672003756.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiffwqv4MN04PM6keijoZ5Asn74uKF1RpOIefcg7nvOa8S0avcljW8ML7vPFTUOL5lXQzxv3g4Ge11AfB_lesL4UAeZNG8mVLVtEmp0c1GKnnR9OTPnCERMlTKRW0PX3XCPpkvKmnhwd3-v/s640/blogger-image-1641483244.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiffwqv4MN04PM6keijoZ5Asn74uKF1RpOIefcg7nvOa8S0avcljW8ML7vPFTUOL5lXQzxv3g4Ge11AfB_lesL4UAeZNG8mVLVtEmp0c1GKnnR9OTPnCERMlTKRW0PX3XCPpkvKmnhwd3-v/s640/blogger-image-1641483244.jpg"></a></div></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03397886797119379882noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2367593292754735850.post-88188432207861114022015-05-11T22:31:00.000-07:002015-05-11T22:31:03.193-07:00Dome SpinThis weekend was another milestone. After fighting with the SyREN10 and the test motor I finally got the motor to engage and spin the rockler. Its really slow but super high torque. I could probably drive R2 around and low speed with that thing. Order a Pololu that is pretty common in the Astromech forums. Should be here Friday.<br />
<br />
While looking for motor specs in the forums I came to realize that I need to upgrade the power bus wiring. What I have was ok for proof/testing but good chance it won't stand up well to long term usage. Going to have to order some 14 Gauge wire. I'd like to swap out the terminal block for a fuse block at some point as well.<br />
<br />
Now I need to get a battery, voltage regulator for 12V-5V drop, and a slip ring to finish out the basic electronics. Once I have foot motors I'm looking to add some relays that I can break the moto-to-Sabertooth loop to avoid any regenerative breaking feedback. I am planning to use the Arduino to energize the relay so that 2 things are required for the motors to receive power:<br />
<ol>
<li> the Arduino is On</li>
<ol>
<li> this means if the board is powered off the foot motors will automatically get disconnected. </li>
</ol>
<li>The Arduino enables the foot motors by command from the controller </li>
<ol>
<li>The foot motors would be disabled automatically on boot</li>
<li>Manual intervention at the controller is required to enable the motors. I can disable them at any time from the controller. Example would be when R2 is just sitting at a convention booth. He can't move around but the random sounds and dome movements can be running.</li>
</ol>
</ol>

I now have a small router and table, a drill press, and a band saw. Worked some small projects and man its nice to have the right (or better) tool for the job at hand.<br />

After a lot of attempt to get PS2 controller to work, I finally gave up and migrated to what is called the .<a href="http://astromech.net/forums/showthread.php?19298-S-H-A-D-O-W-Padawan-based-mini-PS3-Controller&highlight=shadow" target="_blank">S.H.A.D.O.W</a> (or just Shadow) controller setup. I've seen others use this with a long range in crowds and I just could never get my PS2 controller to stay connected to the Arduino. The Shaow setup is easy and I just needed the $10 controller, a $50 Arduino Mega ADK and the $16 bluetooth USB dongle and BAM, its up and running with little problems. I did have to go back and re-add all my sounds onto my card one at a time instead of bulk loading them like I used to. Now all my sounds work perfectly. Yay!<br />
<br />
Ordered the rest of the sound system which should alll arrive in the next few weeks. Speaker, amp, bits and pieces. I hadn't figured out how to use the Serial monitor so I couldn't troubleshoot the issues I ran into effectively and wound up setting the project aside for a while. Today I was browsing the Astromech forums and luckily decided to re-look at the MarcDuino thread and found that Marc had written the code himself since last I looked at the thread. I just had to try it out and after setting everything up and loading the new sketch onto the Teeces I found it works very well. I just need to solder a wire to the RX1 pin on the Arduino Pro Mini board so it can connect to the MarcDuino PC0 pin and then I gotta figure out a mount setup inside the dome. With this working I'm going to want another MP3 trigger to layer the sounds from both systems. YAY!<br />
<br />
Once I have everything mounted in the dome I'll post pics/video of it. <br />
<br />
So my buddy Mike asked me to help him with putting this RotoPod Periscope light kit together. I figure I owe him for the free Syren10 he gave me and he's promised to help my fix up my Radar Eye this weekend at Makers Faire so I figure its a fair trade. There was both more and less to putting this together than I originally thought. I thought there would be more soldering and wiring to do but there wasn't a whole lot. The actual assembly wasn't too difficult except for the tight work space getting the front red LEDs put in. The real challenge was squeezing everything into the periscope itself. I've done it a couple times now and its just as hard as the first time around, but its done now, even if I do say so myself, it looks great.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
So I only have 2 real complaints:<br />
<br />
1. the Center LEDs are a little to right for my tastes, but that can be fixed with a code update.<br />
2. I don't have one of these kits for my R2.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03397886797119379882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2367593292754735850.post-10056225830535396562014-06-12T11:04:00.001-07:002014-06-12T11:04:51.441-07:00Padawan test setup I decided to go with the Padawan control system since it flexible, already works with the teeces lights I have, and readily available. <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">With the PS2 controller and the Arduino Uno I already have I started building my control system. 1) PS2 wireless controller<br />
1) Set of Under Shoulder Details (4)<br />
1) coin slots<br />
1) set of Shoulder Hydraulics (2)<br />
1) Radar Eye<br />
<br />
Hopefully those will arrive in the next week or two. I've decided to go ahead and order a second Radar eye because of 1) the huge air bubbles found in my first one when trying to sand it to the fit the dome, and 2) some mistakes I made trying to clean up the slot under the eye lens. I still need to file downs some edges and fill in some gaps. I have the external ribs put together and filed smooth so the are dry to attach. You can see them behind and to the left of the skirt. There is a lot of filing to just get all the glue surfaces smooth and ready for the weld-on #3. <div>The plans call for bolts that are 2 1/4" but those aren't available locally. Frank's assembly instructions do provide a link to an online provider, I just was to impatient so I have 2 1/2" bolts. Frank says you can grind off the extra 1/4" but for now I'm just planning to put a second nut on top. I think it won't be in the way and should help lock the nuts so they don't loosen over time easily.</div><div><br></div>(The bolts shown here are actually 2" bolts I mistakenly bought first. I forgot that the bolt had to go through another styrene plate. Silly me.)<br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5NcSARU9hlW2A4szKel_upvzJO3e3L2tkFYt_mBUnu7SdbMnidLTNRjpvnHcKlgLxO6dcCiaXe8OV0OLhfaoRMBV6ZvkCtR-xHdFy_ifa7_tCw_7xmpizavPmqjweshhyg6jpS9jagh4h/s640/blogger-image-1964373920.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5NcSARU9hlW2A4szKel_upvzJO3e3L2tkFYt_mBUnu7SdbMnidLTNRjpvnHcKlgLxO6dcCiaXe8OV0OLhfaoRMBV6ZvkCtR-xHdFy_ifa7_tCw_7xmpizavPmqjweshhyg6jpS9jagh4h/s640/blogger-image-1964373920.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinXdMhTmuugvX1NC_tEGCVbyb0QQTBlPV5_pswJ6KFRoxJ1J-wADla_OVCJpP0ZpqECZCkxAVaxXI7wXygGgo4KhcLJ9lJsFMxXWjY1O8ZMibJLTDcJPNcpq4a3dttIXJWwRrsBFd6oY4n/s640/blogger-image-404108183.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinXdMhTmuugvX1NC_tEGCVbyb0QQTBlPV5_pswJ6KFRoxJ1J-wADla_OVCJpP0ZpqECZCkxAVaxXI7wXygGgo4KhcLJ9lJsFMxXWjY1O8ZMibJLTDcJPNcpq4a3dttIXJWwRrsBFd6oY4n/s640/blogger-image-404108183.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Once I got the frame bits smoothed and glued with the 2 1/2" bolts inserted I added the styrene skin. I had planned to use metallic duct tape to cover the styrene skin as recommended by a Frank but local builder Mike Ghrula suggested I use duct flashing instead and WOW do I love it. I did still use the tape to cover the flashing seam. The sea will be facing down once attached to the frame so it will not be seen unless someone goes looking for it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I used a small MDF piece with holes drilled through so I could easily flush the skin edge on one edge and also make wpsure it went on straight.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_9lzigA9BCfaVUwBdZmUksUyCvvuy8w053uFAcgFx9KZiQnctW4Ue2Vrs6nMISJZ0Ya32HRNJX2ghDHat1lCGbvjoOTbrzIuJvlgdYG8ZVygp8zpm35GcE9PSp6NIa4J_z-MCQ4ocsvLA/s640/blogger-image-1196825783.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_9lzigA9BCfaVUwBdZmUksUyCvvuy8w053uFAcgFx9KZiQnctW4Ue2Vrs6nMISJZ0Ya32HRNJX2ghDHat1lCGbvjoOTbrzIuJvlgdYG8ZVygp8zpm35GcE9PSp6NIa4J_z-MCQ4ocsvLA/s640/blogger-image-1196825783.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4Yj4UWE401E636oNw6S_cE4pISXVhKCSm72nDPbnsOq2j9uA7WU89HJdl-Rw9IelHAi6fXXF41UtBOXx5og_hWgL10h5rxRgbjfjtlt80vPjsUrhQAEwbKB9gMjtpruQkHRwKdNsSruMH/s640/blogger-image--678892204.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4Yj4UWE401E636oNw6S_cE4pISXVhKCSm72nDPbnsOq2j9uA7WU89HJdl-Rw9IelHAi6fXXF41UtBOXx5og_hWgL10h5rxRgbjfjtlt80vPjsUrhQAEwbKB9gMjtpruQkHRwKdNsSruMH/s640/blogger-image--678892204.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">You can see on the hub in the back that I used some hose clamps to hold the skins while the glue dries. This centered the MDF ring nicely so I was just able to drill through them both together.<div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHmKOf_O0do10fvd-aowlcITQe8O74ODmq9WlIqbbhpSTpz9NVfXRolSGZdpsl_ABtnVG8VZ9okD5q_6mURhSaxNSi7rZTs7WQU3LqCdHcLjGXEftjTqMBK6_RGirYAQRLMiLaFSQfeJKs/s640/blogger-image--700056419.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHmKOf_O0do10fvd-aowlcITQe8O74ODmq9WlIqbbhpSTpz9NVfXRolSGZdpsl_ABtnVG8VZ9okD5q_6mURhSaxNSi7rZTs7WQU3LqCdHcLjGXEftjTqMBK6_RGirYAQRLMiLaFSQfeJKs/s640/blogger-image--700056419.jpg"></a></div></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03397886797119379882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2367593292754735850.post-32651937838287392092014-05-29T13:11:00.001-07:002014-05-29T13:12:56.037-07:00Getting ready for KC Maker's Faire<div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Ok so I've been busy and not updating the build log. Shame on me. Got the rocker, frame, skirt, arm box, and shoulder hubs in. Got some work on each of them but the hubs are actually done. I'll put up individual posts for each so there isn't just one huge post.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">I also picked up a router table on the way back from St. Louis a couple months ago. Very handy for my MDF ring though I wasn't able to get the bottom of my dome inner skin to a uniform height and wound up over doing it so there won't be any gap between the two bottom rings. Going to really figure out how to use this thing.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikHw3pk5UoLuoJ0M5EO5yxuqBGegpT0uPu8E9ieTOzmjN1j8KFrIXmqMFqhK4iiAjfaBn3sfq5RT19pyd1rsl6_dbHQh7KTKslAyU-AMzh36OzvtSYTZEz0h-jJ4h7VTmKha2HpJ34w4Qb/s640/blogger-image--1313738753.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikHw3pk5UoLuoJ0M5EO5yxuqBGegpT0uPu8E9ieTOzmjN1j8KFrIXmqMFqhK4iiAjfaBn3sfq5RT19pyd1rsl6_dbHQh7KTKslAyU-AMzh36OzvtSYTZEz0h-jJ4h7VTmKha2HpJ34w4Qb/s640/blogger-image--1313738753.jpg"></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03397886797119379882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2367593292754735850.post-26374219603771455492014-03-17T18:25:00.001-07:002014-03-17T18:25:47.582-07:00Frame, skirt, arm box, and rockler orderedSo I got my federal return this weekend and after looking at everyone elses' frames I decided it was time to order my rockler and frame. Spent the weekend looking at the Everet and the Egg Crate Frame. Also looked at what some stuff on the forums and I've decided to get the Egg Frame pre-cut from Frank Pirz. I placed an order for a frame, skirt, and arm box so I"m on the bottom of the list but I'm on the list :D<br />
<br />
Also ordered my rockler bearing. I think it is going to be helpful in painting my dome since I can spray and spin it to get an even coat all around instead of painting in sections. I think its also going to be helpful shaving down the MDF ring to fit into the dome but we'll see.<br />
<br />
All told I should have enough to keep my busy for quite a while. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03397886797119379882noreply@blogger.com0
